Why Your Brief Determines Your Results
Most brands blame poor influencer content on the creator. In reality, the brief is usually the problem. A vague brief produces vague content. A specific brief produces specific, effective content.
Here is a complete guide to writing a campaign brief that gets results.
The 8 Elements of a Great Brief
1. Brand and Product Overview
Tell the creator what your brand does and what makes your product unique — in plain language, not corporate jargon. Assume they know nothing about you.
Bad: "We are a D2C skincare brand with a holistic approach to wellness."
Good: "We make a Vitamin C face serum that brightens skin in 4 weeks. It is paraben-free, priced at ₹499, and sold on our website and Amazon."
2. Campaign Goal
What do you want to happen after someone watches the content?
- Visit our website / landing page
- Use discount code to buy
- Follow our account
- DM us for more info
- Download our app
Be specific. One goal per campaign.
3. Target Audience
Who is your customer? Give the creator a clear picture so they can speak directly to them.
Example: "Our audience is women aged 22–35 in metros who are interested in skincare and spend ₹1,000–₹3,000 on beauty products monthly."
4. Key Message
What is the ONE thing you want their audience to remember after watching?
Example: "That our serum visibly brightens skin in 4 weeks, unlike other products that take months."
Keep it to one sentence. If you give 5 key messages, the creator will try to include all of them and the content will feel like an ad.
5. Dos — Must Include
- Show the product clearly (close-up of packaging)
- Mention the brand name at least once on camera
- Show themselves using or trying the product
- Include the discount code BRIGHT20 verbally and in caption
- Tag @yourbrand in the caption
- Add link in bio for the duration of the campaign
6. Don'ts — Avoid
- Do not compare to or name any competitor brands
- Do not make medical claims (e.g., "cures acne" — not allowed)
- Do not use heavy filters on the product itself
- Do not post during the same week as [competitor campaign dates]
7. Content Format and Duration
Be specific about what you are buying:
- "One Instagram Reel, 30–45 seconds, vertical format"
- "Two Instagram Stories with product shown, one with a poll or question"
- "One YouTube Short under 60 seconds with the product used on camera"
8. Reference Links
Share 2–3 examples of content you like from other creators. This is the fastest way to communicate tone, style, and energy without writing paragraphs of description.
Sample Brief — Skincare Brand
Brand: Glow Lab — Vitamin C Face Serum (₹499)
Goal: Drive sales via discount code GLOW15
Audience: Women 22–35, interested in affordable skincare
Key message: Real results in 4 weeks, affordable price
Format: 1 Instagram Reel, 30–45 seconds
Dos: Show before/after (even subtle), mention GLOW15 code, tag @glowlabindia
Don'ts: No competitor names, no medical claims, no heavy filters on face
Reference: [link to similar creator's skincare reel]
Deadline: Post within 5 days of receiving the product
What Happens Without a Good Brief
When you give a creator no brief or a vague one, they will:
- Make generic content that does not mention your key benefit
- Forget to include the discount code
- Post it in a format that does not work well algorithmically
- Create something that feels disconnected from your brand
A brief takes 15 minutes to write. It saves you from wasting your entire campaign budget.
